Abingdon VA Family Photographer | Grayson Highlands State Park Wild Pony Session

I truly think this might be one of my favorite sessions to date. I’m so thankful the Calhoun family trusted my vision for their Abingdon, VA family photography session, it turned into something even more magical than I imagined.

Family Session at Grayson Highlands State Park

I’ve always wanted to photograph a session at Grayson Highlands State Park, mainly because of the famous wild ponies. If you know me, you know how much I love animals, so this location has been at the top of my list for a long time. One of the unique things about Grayson Highlands State Park family sessions is that seeing the wild ponies is never guaranteed. They truly roam free, which makes every experience there a little unpredictable, and even more special.

A Magical Wild Pony Encounter

I’ll be honest, I was absolutely hoping (and praying) we would see ponies during this session. When we arrived, I had no idea where to go to find them, so we simply chose a spot and started shooting. Not long after we got settled, we heard rustling in the trees behind us… and then, like something out of a dream, two wild ponies appeared, a mama and her baby. I couldn’t believe it. I was beyond excited. It felt like one of those moments where everything just comes together perfectly. These are the kinds of experiences that make me love what I do even more.

Natural, Candid Family Photography Moments

The ponies stayed close by and were incredibly gentle. The baby pony was especially friendly and seemed to take a liking to Kenna, which made for the sweetest, most natural moments. This session was full of genuine connection, movement, and joy, everything I aim for in my outdoor family photography sessions in Abingdon, VA. The combination of the mountain landscape, soft light, and unexpected wildlife made these images feel truly one of a kind.
