Planning your engagement session is exciting—but figuring out what to do with your hands? That part can feel a little intimidating. As an experienced East Tennessee Engagement Photographer, one of my favorite parts of engagement sessions is helping couples feel relaxed, connected, and confident in front of the camera.
Truthfully, you don’t need modeling experience or have to know how to pose. Just show up as yourselves. I’ll guide you through the rest.
Below are a few posing tips and an easy breakdown of poses vs. prompts so you know exactly what to expect.
Many people assume a photoshoot means stiff, awkward poses—but that’s not the case at all.
Here’s the difference:
Posing is more structured. It’s when I guide you into a specific setup—like how to stand, where to place your hands, or the angle that photographs best. Think soft guidance such as:
“Touch your foreheads together.”
“Lean into him slightly.”
“Hold hands and turn your bodies toward the mountains.”
These small tweaks make a big impact visually.
Prompts are actions or interactions designed to bring out natural emotion. They create movement, laughter, and candid moments you’ll love. These sound like:
“Whisper your favorite inside joke in her ear.”
“Walk toward me like you’re tipsy and trying not to fall.”
“Tell him your favorite thing about him.”
Prompts help you loosen up so the photos feel genuine, not stiff.
During your engagement session, you’ll get a mix of both—classic posed moments and fun, candid prompts that capture your relationship as it really is.
Hands are always the first giveaway if someone feels nervous. Keep them soft:
Gently rest your hand on your partner’s chest or arm
Lightly hold their hand or wrist
Play with their sleeve or jacket
Soft hands = natural photos.
The more places your bodies connect, the more intimate the image will feel. Try:
Foreheads touching
Holding hands
Wrapping arms around each other
Leaning into one another while you walk
Connection photographs beautifully.
Movement instantly makes photos feel real. A few favorites:
Slow dancing
Walking hand-in-hand
Twirling
Leaning in for a kiss with movement
Brushing hair away or tucking it behind the ear
Movement keeps you relaxed and gives your photos energy and warmth.
Some of the best photos happen between the poses—the laughter after a prompt, the moment you fall into each other while walking, or the way your partner looks at you when you weren’t expecting it.
I’ll guide you the whole time, but I’ll also give you space to just be yourselves.
You don’t need to show up knowing how to pose. My job is to direct you, help you feel comfortable, and make sure you look incredible at every angle. Your job is simply to enjoy the moment with your partner.
The best engagement photos are the ones that feel real—and with a mix of thoughtful poses and fun prompts, that’s exactly what we’ll create together.
With love,
Michelle
