The last few years women have become more open about the subjects of infertility and pregnancy loss. As a photographer, I think it’s important to be aware and sensitive to these issues. These sessions are more than just capturing images; they are a celebration of hope, resilience, and new life. Here’s how I approach these special sessions with the care they deserve. Create a safe environment
First and foremost, creating a comfortable and safe environment is crucial. During the session, I encourage the family to bring personal items that hold special meaning, such as ultrasound photos or baby shoes. These elements add a deeply personal touch to the photographs.
Handle posing with care
Second, posing is handled with great care and sensitivity. I focus on natural, gentle poses that highlight the bond between the parents and the baby on the way. I aim to create a soft narrative through the images, telling the story of their journey with grace and dignity.
Be flexible
Throughout the session, I remain patient and flexible. Emotions can run high, so it’s important to allow the family time to pause and reflect. My role is to provide support, understanding, and reassurance. It’s my goal to make the experience as positive and uplifting as possible.
Communicate
Lastly, communication is key. From the time of the booking, throughout the planning process and during the session. Offering an open line of communication provides security to the family that I care and empathize. If feelings start to arise, it’s critical the family trusts me in that moment of emotion. If you know that you’ll be photographing someone who has experienced loss, it’s a good idea to do research on ways you can provide support. Click here for a resource.
Photographing a maternity session for families who have faced miscarriage or infertility is an honor. It’s about celebrating the miracle of new life while honoring the journey that brought them here. Each session is a testament to the unwavering strength of the human spirit.
With love,
Michelle
