The Beauty Spot in Erwin, Tennessee is one of those places where nearly every local photographer goes for engagements and family sessions. There are beautiful views but no giant trek like Roan Mountain. The walk up to the bald is very short and accessible to just about anyone. As long as your car can survive the winding, rutted gravel road leading up the mountain, you’ll be perfectly fine. I recommend 4-wheel drive, if possible. Though the drive is intimidating and parking scarce, it is well worth the effort.
One of the more interesting aspects is the variety of people that come visit. The Beauty Spot is part of the Appalachian Trail so folks from all over pass through on a regular basis. Especially during the summer you’ll find tents sprinkled around the bald. Aside from photographers and hikers, many people visit simply for the gorgeous sunsets. It’s the perfect location for a picnic getaway with friends, loved ones and pets.
Then there are moments such as this engagement session with Anna and Peter where the fog covers everything. The mountains may not be as noticeable, but the fog makes you appreciate the colors and foliage around you. This forces photographers to be creative and showcase the Beauty Spot in a different way. Different but just as special. It’s a whole new scene.
