As some of you may know I started shooting film this year. This post is just to kind of tell you guys why I have decided to go in this direction. I know for some when I mention the word film I automatically get a weird look or they are thinking I am making a movie haha. Well it’s not a movie and yes it may be weird to some. Since we live in a digital age where everything is right there no waiting everything is instant. Film is what it is and has always been, you know the rolls you would pick up at Walmart before your school field trip, loading it in the lightweight little plastic container that holds it. Taking that film to the local drug store for pictures… remember how exciting that was to get those pictures back? That is what film does for me. Film gets me excited! It’s like Christmas every time I ship a roll out for processing.
There are some downs to film I am not going to say its all sun shine and rainbows because I would be lying if I said it was perfect. The biggest negative in shooting film is the cost. Shooting film is expensive $3 a picture to be exact and the rolls I currently shoot have 36 shots. On a normal session I may shoot up to 3 rolls, so if you guys can do the math its pretty pricey. The cost for me doesn’t out way the benefit. I LOVE FILM. For years I was searching for a look I could never achieve with my digital. I wanted soft dreamy tones, perfect skin colors and film does that for me. Film makes me wait for the moment instead of snapping thousands of shots to get one I like. I connect with my clients better because I slow down. For me, film is more meaningful! The look of film is imperfect and real.. its beautiful.
I wanted to incorporate film into my wedding photography this year but I have decided to make a change with everything. No worries I am not putting down the digital for good. There are times when digital just outshines film like those low light indoor situations we can’t avoid sometimes. So for that reason I will still be using both in my photography work. I was telling a friend that film makes me want to eat angel food cake and dance in a field of flowers all while wearing a pink frilly dress haha. So I am hoping you guys will eat angel food cake too and join me in celebrating film 🙂 .
